Haute-Goth

Emulate the gothic looks seen on the catwalks of Gareth Pugh and Rick Owens with a mish-mash layering of staple black, distressed denims and high street finds like the H&M Nirvana jumper below. There aren't alot of rules when it comes to this look as it's all about self expression. Keep the tones dark but opt for charcoals and even navy tones to avoid a monotone black effect.

Navajo Capetastic

No that is not a Harry Potter spell, it is in fact one of this season's most stand-out trends. Capes are huge, and thanks to Isabel Marant the Navajo print is the hottest pattern this season. Why not kill two birds with one stone and combine the two? Capes are intended for layering (and are usually thinner than a winter coat) so throw yours over a warm cardie, a wooly snood and high waist denim shorts with thick knit tights for a cute daytime look. As always with statement prints, keep the rest of the look minimal to avoid clashing and keep the attention on the cape.

Wooly Wonder

Everyone needs an oversized thick knit woolie for these windy, cold days. Cream, although difficult to keep clean, goes with almost every colour and print. The key to this look is comfort. Pull it over a printed dress with thick knit tights and military boots for an on-trend, effortless look. Alternatively, the oversized wooly looks great with your favourite skinnies. Worn with a flared or boyfriend jean will result in an unflattering, boxed look. Here are just a few of my wooly lust-haves.

House of Wax

The wax finished trouser is an easier, more subtle way to wear this season's sheen fabrics than the more daring leather/pleather trou, giving a nod to the trend in a more physically flattering manner than it's leather sister. Tuck them into a heeled slouchy boot with a layered cashmere and oversized scarf for a chic daytime look or dress them up with a tucked in chiffon blouse and heeled booties for an evening out.

Starry Night

Embrace the Christmas season by rocking this year's hottest print- Stars. I like white on black for maximum impact and recently purchased the below sequin dress by UK label Maggie&Me. However as the ladies below prove, star print is not restricted to party dresses. Layer it over or under casual looks but be sure to keep the rest of the look minimal and avoid mixing it with other prints, the stars speak for themselves as the statement attraction.

Faux Fabulous

Regardless of your moral standing on wearing animal fur, fashion followers can unite on one view-with few exceptions, a faux fur coat has strong potential to look cheap and trashy. Why not avoid taking the risk and accessorise your look with just a little faux fur instead. The faux collar adds instant glamour (not to mention warmth) to your leather jacket and freshens up the look of last year's winter coat. Cheaper versions are available from H&M and asos.com or if you want to opt for the real deal, vintage is always your best option.

Cool for Coco

Giving Chanel a funky modern twist, these ladies move away from the classic look with which the brand is conventionally associated. Teaming their tees with converse, biker jackets and oversized layering, I have no doubt Coco herself would be beaming with pride.

"Fashion is always of the time in which you live. It is not something standing alone. But the grand problem, the most important problem, is to rejeuvenate women. To make women look young. Then their outlook changes. They feel more joyous"- Coco Chanel

Polka Polka

Rarely do we see a trend escalate so fast and with such ubiquity from catwalk to high street than the Stella Mc Cartney polkadot/mesh 'Lucia' bodycon as seen on Vogue Japan's editor in chief Anna Dello Russo, below. I recently purchased a shorter high street version for 15 euro, a steal compared to the 1590 euro asking price for the real deal.

Hippy Envy

Longing for it to be festival season so I can acceptably like a bohemian wildflower...

Clutch Some Colour

A colour pop clutch jazzes up any outfit. Go for oversized for an on-trend look. Keep the rest of your outfit in muted tones so that the clutch is your statement feature and to prevent the look appearing overdone.

Vintage Printage

Those brave enough to don a bold vintage print jacket/woolie this season should take caution in keeping the rest of the look minimal. Best worn over muted nude, white or dark tones, the jacket itself makes enough of an impact for the entire outfit to create a show-stopping look. Team it with double denim to really bring the print up to season. Accessorise with a chunky ring or two and a wide bangle to embrace the eccentricity of the print and give the outfit an intentional Ab-Fab effect.

Modern Monochrome

Mix contrasting fabrics like leather and cashmere to give edgy twist to the classic black and white look, so chic it never goes out of style.

Wait a Minute Mr. Postman

The leather satchel is by far my favourite bag this, last and almost every season. Best worn dressed down with a layered look, the satchel, originally designed as a book-bag, eludes an image of preppy cool. If you are thinking of purchasing, I would recommend investing in a good quality vintage leather version as this bag will carry you from season to season. For big budgets, look no further than the Mulberry Alexa (so-called after Alexa Chung's obsession with the satchel) but cheaper highstreet versions can be found at Topshop and even Penneys.
